Any trip to London isn’t complete without indulging in traditional English afternoon tea.
According to Afternoon Tea Co., afternoon tea is a tea-related ritual introduced in the early 1840’s in Great Britain. It was basically invented to hold off hunger before dinner which was usually served at 8:00 P.M.
Today, the traditional meal is mainly composed of finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam (do you spread the clotted cream first with the jam on top or vice versa?), and an assortment of tiny cakes and pastries.
During my short time in London, I indulged in traditional English afternoon tea at The Goring Hotel, located in Westminster. There are many places to enjoy afternoon tea in London, but I chose The Goring after reading about how the cucumber sandwiches are favored by Queen Elizabeth herself. Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, actually enjoys indulging in tea here, as well.

The Goring is a popular location to enjoy its famous afternoon tea, and reservations are required. Many people enjoy afternoon tea in the tea room, but the day and time that was convenient for me was the lounge. The lounge was a beautiful yellow-lit room that overlooks the croquet field. You also have a choice of tea as well as certain sparkling wines to pair with your amuse-bouches.
I caught an Uber since my reservation was conveniently after I twisted my ankle while walking down the steps of Tower Bridge and The Goring staff were so accommodating. They brought me a bag of ice to place on my ankle while I sipped on my tea and ate my scones. They also brought me extra goodies free of charge for the ride back home.

If you are ever in the area, I definitely think you should consider making your first formal afternoon tea experience one to remember by visiting The Goring Hotel.

Such a great post! To be honest, I’m not a huge tea drinker but this place looks absolutely charming! x

I’ve been accustomed to drinking black tea with cream and sugar, like the English do. They have such a large variety of tea, from herbal to oolong! I would definitely experiment before going so you can drink your favorite!
